What are the Physical Therapy CEUs requirements?

Another good resource for determining individual state Continuing Education Activity Approval is the Jurisdiction Licensure Reference Guide. Are Physical Therapists board certified?

Physical Therapists have the opportunity to become Board-certified Clinical Specialists. The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) offers this opportunity. Accordingly, specialization is the process by which a physical therapist builds on a broad base of professional education and practice. Building a broad base develops a greater depth of knowledge and skills related to a particular area of practice. Additionally, Specialty certification is voluntary, and Physical Therapists can become board-certified specialists in multiple areas. These areas include Cardiovascular and Pulmonary, Clinical Electrophysiology, Geriatrics, Neurology, Oncology, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Sports Physical Therapy, and Women’s Health. The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) has certified more than 24,000 individuals.  These individuals have demonstrated advanced clinical knowledge and skills in physical therapy specialty areas.

Is there an online physical therapy program?

Currently, Professional (entry-level) and Post-Professional (transitional) physical therapist education programs in the US offer the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree to all new students who enroll. Accordingly, the length of professional DPT programs is typically 3 years. The Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) prescribes the curriculum that all DPT programs offer. Subsequently, the curriculum consists of around 40 individual classes plus internships. The curriculum is contingent on the educational model that the individual school follows.

Does physical therapy help chronic pain?

Many patients that are experiencing chronic pain can benefit from seeing a Physical Therapist. In general, Physical Therapists use a wide variety of evidence-based modalities and manual treatment techniques. Subsequently, these techniques help patients reduce and manage their chronic pain. IACET

The International Association for Continuing Education And Training (IACET) developed the original Continuing Education Unit (CEU). As a result, IACET today ensures that providers of continuing education and training can prove they provide high-quality instruction. IACET accomplishes high-quality instruction by following the ANSI/IACET Standard for Continuing Education and Training. IACET’s story begins with a U.S. Department of Education task force and a challenge: Is it feasible to measure noncredit continuing education activities?

Initially, in1970, the CEU is Born.
The CEU is born and standardized as 10 contact hours.
Subsequently, in 1977, the Task Force Grows.
The task force grows into the Council on the Continuing Education Unit (CCEU). The CCEU is then encouraged to become a certifying body.
1990 – IACET is Founded.
The CCEU becomes into IACET, an international membership organization.
1992 – IACET Launches Accreditation Program
IACET launches its Certified Provider Program.
1998 – When the Certified Provider Program evolves into the Authorized Provider Program, the IACET CEU is created.
2006 – IACET Becomes an ANSI Standards Developer.

CEU

The term “CEU” is in the public domain. Consequently, many organizations use the term “CEU” for quantifying continuing education or professional training hours. According to the IACET website https://www.iacet.org/, a task force created and defined the CEU in 1970 after IACET and the U.S. Department of Education task force studied the measurement of non-credit continuing education activities. As a result, the DOE and IACET designed the continuing education unit (CEU). Subsequently, DOE and IACET designed the CEU to provide a standard unit (10 contact hours) of measurement for continuing education and training; quantify continuing education and training (CE/T) activities; and accommodate for the diversity of providers, activities, and purposes in adult education.

About ACCET

For the purpose of improving continuing education and training ACCET was founded in 1974. Since 1978,  ACCET has been officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a “reliable authority” as to the quality of education and training provided by the institutions we accredit. Subsequently, accreditation serves the interests of companies, agencies, and the public through the establishment of standards, policies, and procedures. Additionally, ACCET has established the standards, policies, and procedures in conjunction with an objective third-party professional evaluation. ACCET has designed the evaluation to identify and inspire sound education and training practices. A partnership for quality becomes reality when such a process is matched by an institution’s commitment to high standards and accountability,

   The Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training (ACCET) is a voluntary group of educational organizations. These organizations are affiliated to improve continuing education and training. Accordingly, through its support of an independent Accrediting Commission, the ACCET membership promulgates and sustains the Standards for Accreditation. ACCET also provides policies and procedures that measure and ensure educational standards of quality. The U.S. Secretary of Education has recognized the ACCET for this purpose, and accordingly, the U.S. Department of Education lists ACCET as a nationally recognized accrediting agency. https://accet.org/

ProCert

The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy formerly offered the ProCert system until Dec 2019. Earlier on, the ProCert system awarded whole-number Continuing Competence Units (CCUs) values. Accordingly, these values reflected compliance with 14 Standards for Continuing Competence Activities that the FSBPT had developed. However, the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy discontinued the ProCert program at the end of 2019. Also, the FSBPT discontinued the accompanying aPTitude system at the end of 2019. Therefore, the unfortunate result is there currently is not a centralized, uniform CEU approval/recording process for Physical Therapy CEUs.

CE For Therapy was launched in June 2017 and is scanning for new Physical Therapy Continuing Education Courses continuously.
